GOLD CUP RACE OF CHAMPIONS: The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series roll into The Golden State for the first two of five nights of racing. Fresh off a __ finish at Willamette Speedway, Shane Stewart and his Kyle Larson Racing team head to Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., for the 65th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions.
2017 GOLD CUP OPENER: Last year, Stewart claimed the fastest lap in qualifying and finished second in his heat race on the opening night. After earning a front row starting position in the Craftsman Club Dash, Stewart settled into the runner-up position for the first six laps of the 30-lap feature. He was able to claim the lead on lap 7 but eventually lost the top spot to eventual race winner, Kyle Hirst in lapped traffic to finish second. DEFENDING CHAMP: The following night, Stewart qualified sixth in Flight A of qualifying, won his heat race after starting third and earned the third starting spot for the 40-lap feature in the Craftsman Club Dash. Stewart quickly advanced to second on the opening lap of Saturday’s finale. While racing in heavy lapped traffic, Stewart seized the lead on lap 11. The remaining 29 laps were not without difficulty as two lapped cars in a couple different incidences spun directly in front of the leader. Stewart ultimately survived two restarts in the closing laps to finally become a Gold Cup Champion after many years of trying. Race highlights available here: https://youtu.be/66vy1q1zBSY.
STEWART ON WINNING THE GOLD CUP: “I just can’t thank Kyle [Larson] and Justin [Marks] enough,” said Stewart in victory lane. “They always give us the ability to come out here and do our jobs. When you retire, you are only remembered for the big races you win and this was one that I’ve always wanted to win. We’ve been close the last few years and to finally get it means so much to me.”
